HY-80 Steel
MetalTek is Certified to Produce HY-80 Metal Castings
MetalTek’s Carondelet Division is certified to produce HY-80 steel metal castings up to eight (8) inches in thickness to Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Technical Publication T9074-BD-GIB-010/0300 (Tech Pub 300). Carondelet is one of few manufacturers to offer HY-80 using the sand casting process.
What Is HY-80 Steel?
HY-80 is a high-performance, low alloy steel with small amounts of nickel and chromium. HY-80 is known for its strength and toughness. It derives its name from its minimum yield strength of 80,000 pounds per square inch (psi). Manufacturers are independently certified in HY-80 production.
HY-80's properties make it ideal for the naval defense market, including submarines and surface ships. Its high strength-to-weight ratio and toughness suit structural applications, and its weldability allows complex assemblies.
HY-80 has the corrosion resistance to withstand the effects of saltwater.
What Are The Benefits Of HY-80?
Benefits of HY-80 steel include:
-
High strength: HY-80's exceptional minimum yield strength of 80,000 psi allows it to withstand heavy loads without permanent deformation.
-
Toughness: HY-80 absorbs energy and without fracturing, critical for applications subject to dynamic loading and impact such as naval vessels.
-
Weldability: HY-80 can be fabricated into complex structures and assemblies without sacrificing its strong mechanical properties.
-
Corrosion resistance: While not as corrosion resistant as stainless steel, HY-80 withstands saltwater environments.
